Enjoy the Outdoors & Celebrate Join Hands Day!

Sat 5/4 PMD VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY @ Picturesque Fresh Pond

WHAT Rebuild water bars and switchbacks
        to improve and thus to increase public enjoyment
        of Cambridge's drinking water supply since
        the trails have been eroded by snow, melting snow,
        and rain.

        No experience required. Everyone works at
        his/her own pace and is encouraged to take
        water and rest breaks, as well as to enjoy
        walking around the reservoir.

        This project will include a brown bag lunch with chief
        ranger Jean Rogers, who will also answer questions
        during our tasks.

WHO People Making a Difference (PMD) is a
        nonprofit organization that promotes informed and
        responsible volunteerism by involving people
        in tangible, hands-on work that meets
        local needs and by assisting companies
        and charities in building successful community
        involvement programs that:
       * Produce appreciable results while
         conserving recipients' limited resources,
       * Educate volunteers about broader issues,
       * Bring people together to make a difference.

"Fresh Pond Reservation, at the northwest edge of Cambridge, MA,
 has been described as a 'landscape loved to death.' Certainly it
 is a landscape that has been changed by its various uses over
 the years and one to which Cantabridgeans and Bostonians have
 felt an intense attachment. Henry James returned to it in his
 sixties, looking for some 'echo of the dreams of youth,'
 feeling keenly the 'pleasure of memory'; a Harvard student of
 the 1850s fondly remembered skating parties and the chance of
 'flirtation with some fair-ankled beauty of breezy Boston';
 modern residents argue fiercely over dogs being allowed to run
 free at the reservation and whether soccer or nature is a more
 valuable experience for Cambridge schoolchildren."
