Assist children and neighbors with fun harvest activities: pumpkin decorating, contests, games, crafts, etc.
WHERE
Somerville Community Growing Center, Somerville's Union Square
Note: PMD only shares specific directions, maps, and other details with registered volunteers since we cannot accommodate any walk-ins, i.e., unregistered volunteers simply showing up.WHY
Begun in 1994, it is a center for both environmental education and cultural performances. It provides a hands-on learning environment for local youth to learn about the natural world, science, community service and cultural issues. Volunteers coordinate concerts and other events like the annual Harvest Fest that are free to the public, in addition to educational programming.
HOW
Individuals may only sign up themselves (and may not reserve spaces for others).
Incomplete submissions cannot be honored.
Youth age 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult (age 18+) who separately registers with PMD by the deadline AND fully participates.
Call PMD if you cannot sign up using our form.
If you experience any difficult registering online to volunteer with PMD, please immediately CALL THE PMD OFFICE at
After you successfully complete PMD's online registration for the backup list for the rain date, you will immediately see a confirmation screen AND receive a confirmation email message. Then a few days before this project, PMD will email specific details as PDFs, including directions to the project site (by public transportation and by car*), what to expect, a checklist on how to prepare, and for minors, a waiver-release form since a parent/guardian must co-sign and submit hardcopies (Adult volunteers provide their full consents online, so require no hardcopies).
*Due to area traffic jams and difficulty finding on-street parking, we strongly recommend that drivers plan for an additional 20-30 minutes travel time. On-street visitor parking is allowed on Sundays.
WHO
Volunteers age 12+ assist children and neighbors with fun harvest activities: pumpkin decorating, contests, games, nature crafts and activities, and video booth.Like all PMD projects, this project requires being in excellent health (and living with others who are also), ability to lift and move items up to 20 pounds unaided, good fine motor skills, ability to work semi-independently after brief instruction, and participation for the entire project time span, with water and rest breaks.
All volunteers must register in advance - PMD canNOT accept unregistered "walk in" participants.
